Types of Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is the less common type of diabetes. It’s where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that are used to produce insulin. This causes there to be no insulin produced at all, which means blood glucose levels can get extremely high which can seriously harm the body’s organs.

This type of diabetes can occur because of genetics, however there are other triggers which are unknown. It is sometimes referred to as early onset diabetes as it usually develops before the age of 40.

If you have this type of diabetes, you’ll need insulin injections for the rest of your life.

Type 2 diabetes is where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin produced doesn’t react well to the body’s cells.

This type of diabetes is most common in older people and is often referred to as maturity onset diabetes. It is also often associated with obesity.

This type of diabetes can be managed by leading a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise and regularly monitoring blood glucose levels. Some patients may also be required to take medication in order to prevent their condition from getting worse.

If you are diagnosed with prediabetes, this is when blood sugar levels are higher than the normal range, but not high enough to be diagnosed with having type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
